Hello, crafty friends!
Welcome to my creative corner. Today, I’m excited to share with you an adventure that started with a simple idea: creating a captivating scene on a slimline slider card featuring four adorable penguins from Polkadoodles.
As a member of the Polkadoodles design team, I recently took on the challenge of creating a card with the theme “Bundled up/baby it’s cold outside”. To meet this challenge, I used the digital bundle of Waddy and Wanda penguins. These four cute penguins made my task even more exciting.
The card I created depicts a frozen landscape full of penguins, ready to have some winter fun. I want to take you on this crafting adventure with me, sharing the steps behind this winter slimline slider card.
Moreover, the Polkadoodles challenge blog has a new challenge called “Anything Goes”, and everyone can participate, regardless of whether or not they use Polkadoodles products. As a part of the design team, we receive unique themes to work with, continuously presenting diverse products that stimulate creativity. So, it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase your creativity.
Let’s embark on this journey together and have some fun!
Crafting a Winter Slimline Slider Card: Design and Preparation
I enjoy creating winter-themed cards, especially during this time of year. For my latest project, I used a digital bundle of Polkadoodles featuring four adorable penguins. The penguins perfectly capture the “Bundled Up/Baby, It’s Cold Outside” theme with their playful attitude and winter-themed elements.
Choosing the digital stamps
I chose the Waddy and Wanda Penguin – Bundle of Digi stamps to match the theme. These digital stamps are not just pictures, but little stories waiting to be brought to life on paper. Waddy riding a sleigh with a kite in hand and jumping from a present, and Wanda with a playful heart-decorated flag and a cute tree, add depth and character to the intended winter scene.
Choosing the colour palette
The design team instructed us to use specific colours, including grey and blue with a pop of lilac. This is why I chose this digital bundle to use. The blues and greys form the serene backdrop of the wintry landscape, while the subtle pop of lilac adds a touch of enchantment and warmth to the card. This colour palette was meticulously chosen to evoke the feeling of a chilly yet heartwarming winter day.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: Crafting a winter slimline slider card
Join me on a creative journey to create a cheerful winter slimline slider card. In this detailed tutorial, I’ll guide you through every step of the process and reveal the magic behind creating a picturesque winter scene and creating an interactive card.
Step 1. Materials and measurements used.
Before we start our crafting adventure, let’s gather all the materials we need. Below is a list of essential supplies and measurements required for this playful project.
Materials
- Polkadoodles Digital Stamps: Waddy and Wanda Penguin – Bundle of Digi stamps
- White Card stock: to die-cut snowbanks, snowflakes and snow tops.
- Grey Card stock: to die-cut or cut the mountains.
- Snowhill dies: to create the snow banks. You can also cut it yourself if you don’t have dies.
- Mountain dies: to create the hills. You can also cut it yourself if you don’t have dies.
- Deco snow: to bring texture to the snow tops.
- Snowflake dies: to die-cut the snowflakes.
- Colour medium: I used alcohol markers, but you can use any colour medium you like.
- Digital sentiments: I used two sentiments from the Theo Penguin sentiments/greeting set. You can use any sentiment you like.
Measurements
- 1 piece of 21 centimetres by 10.5 centimetres white cardstock for the background.
- 1 piece of 21 centimetres by 21 centimetres white cardstock for the card base.
These materials are essential in making this slimline slider card.
Step 2. Creating the slimline card base
To create a sturdy card, it is important to start with a solid base. The size of a slimline basic card is 10.5 centimetres by 21 centimetres. You can either purchase a pre-made card base from a store or make one yourself. I chose to make my card base using a sheet of white paper that measures 21 centimetres by 21 centimetres. Simply score the paper at 10.5 centimetres and fold it in half. Your card base is now complete and ready to be decorated.
Step 3. Preparing Elements: Die-cutting Mountains and Snowbanks
Before we start with the background, we need to create the elements that complete the winter atmosphere.
- Die-cutting the Mountains: I used grey cardstock and mountain-shaped dies to cut out the mountain silhouettes. The mountains added depth and character to the winter landscape. If you don’t have dies, you can draw mountains on a piece of paper and cut them with scissors.
- Die-cutting the snow tops: cut the snow tops out of white card stock using a die.
- Creating Snowbanks: I used snowhill dies for the snowbanks to bring the snowy terrain to life. These snowbanks complemented the mountains, adding a realistic touch to the wintry setting.
- Inking and Texturing: I shaded the mountain edges with chalk inks and added deco snow to the tops for a textured snow effect.
By preparing these elements in advance, it will be easier to ensure everything fits together nicely.
Step 4: Creating the Background
To set the stage for our winter wonderland, we need to create a suitable background. For this, we will use a piece of white cardstock measuring 21 centimetres by 10.5 centimetres. First, I applied ink to the top part of the cardstock using a combination of Black Metal, Noble Blue, and Cookie Monster inks, creating a gradient sky effect. I started from the top with the darkest shade and moved towards the lighter shades at the bottom. This created a beautiful winter sky background.
Next, I placed the die-cut mountains and the back snow hill on the inked background, positioning the mountains at the back to create a sense of depth. I attached this with sticky glue. However, I am still waiting to place the front snow mound because that is where our sliding mechanism is being made.
This step is crucial as it sets the picturesque backdrop for our penguin adventure and provides the perfect setting for our winter scene.
Step 5. Printing and Coloring the Digital Stamp Waddy and Wanda Penguin
In this section, we discuss printing the digital stamps or parts thereof and the colouring process.
Printing the Digital Stamps
I started by printing the digital stamps on white DCP paper. I’m printing this on this paper because I’m going to colour it with alcohol markers. This paper is suitable there. for. Take the size of the pictures into account. Make sure they are the perfect size for your scene. I chose for my pictures to be about 4 centimetres high. The width is then automatically adjusted proportionately.
Colouring with Alcohol Markers
I used alcohol markers to colour the penguin illustrations below with the following colour combinations.
Waddy on the Sleigh:
- Body: Black, Cool Grey 9, Cool Grey 7.
- Face and Belly: Cool Grey 4 and Cool Grey 1.
- Scarf: Mauve Shadow and Blue Grey Purple.
- Ski goggles: Light Sky, Midi Sky, and Dark Sky.
- Kite: Mauve Shadow, Blue Grey Purple, Light Sky, Midi Sky, and Dark Sky.
- Sleigh: Sand, Barn Red, Burnt Sienna, Natural Oak.

Waddy in the Present:
- Body: Black, Cool Grey 9, Cool Grey 7.
- Face: Cool Grey 4 and Cool Grey 1.
- Star and Beak: Pastel Lemon, Yellow, Golden Yellow, and Orange.
- Gift Box: Light Sky, Midi Sky, and Dark Sky.
- Ribbon: Mauve Shadow and Blue Grey Purple.

Wanda with the Garland:
- Body: Black, Cool Grey 9, Cool Grey 8, Cool Grey 7.
- Face and Belly: Cool Grey 4 and Cool Grey 1.
- Scarf and Bow: Mauve Shadow and Blue Grey Purple.
- Garland: Light Sky, Midi Sky, and Dark Sky.
- Beak and feet: Pastel Lemon, Yellow, Golden Yellow, and Orange.

Wanda with the Tree:
- Body: Black, Cool Grey 9, Cool Grey 8, Cool Grey 7.
- Face and Belly: Cool Grey 4 and Cool Grey 1.
- Scarf, shoes, and hat: Mauve Shadow and Blue Grey Purple.
- Fur trim on hat: Cool Grey 4 and Cool Grey 1.
- Tree trunk: Barn Red, Burnt Sienna, Natural Oak.
- Tree leaves: Grass Green, Forest Green, Pine Forest.
Using alcohol markers allowed me to create vibrant and lively colours for these delightful penguins, enhancing the winter scene.

Step 6. Creating the Slider Mechanism
To add movement to your map, you can create a sliding mechanism that allows Waddy to slide along the snowy scene. Follow these steps to create the slider function:
Preparing the Mechanism
- Cut out two small circles from white paper.
- Place a small foam square in the centre of one circle.
- Adhere the second circle on top, sandwiching the foam square in between. This creates the sliding mechanism.
Attaching Waddy
- Affix Waddy on his sleigh onto the top circle of the mechanism.
Creating the Sliding Groove
- Use the snow die as a guide to make the slot for the sliding mechanism. This way it will make the same bend as the mound we made with the same die.
- Decide where Waddy should start on his sledge. Start it just past the top of the hill.
- Place the die on the paper and draw your pencil along it to the place where you want Waddy to stop.
- Make the slit half a centimetre wide. Place the die in the right position and go over it with your pencil.
- Cut out the slot with a craft knife.
Placing foam tape
- Apply foam tape to the back.
- Place the foam tape so that the slider is not affected by obstacles.
Testing the slider
- Carefully slide Waddy along the groove to ensure smooth movement without any obstructions.

Attach the Snow Hill to the Background:
- If the sliding mechanism runs smoothly, attach the snow hill to the card.
By following these steps, you can create an engaging and interactive slider element for your card.
Step 7: Adding the sentiments
Incorporating sentiments into a card can greatly enhance its overall theme. For my latest project, I used two digital sentiments from the Theo Penguin Sentiments/Greetings set: “Flippert Flap, It’s Cold Outside” and “Brrrrr.” I printed these sentiments on DCP paper, alongside the penguins, and precisely cut them out. I strategically placed “Flippert Flap, It’s Cold Outside” in the sky, while “Brrrrrr” found its spot on the bottom left of the snow hill, near Waddy in the snow.

Step 8: Assembling the card and final touches
It’s time to put the finishing touches on the card. Follow these steps to assemble everything and give the card the final touches:
- Placing the rest of the Penguins: Place Waddy coming out of the present at the end of the slider. Place Wanda with the garland between the penguins on the back snow hill, while Wanda with the tree goes all the way to the left as if she’s walking towards the others.
- Adding snowballs to the scene: Draw some snowballs on top of each other like towers with a black fine liner. Place these throughout the scene. I ended up using three stacks.
- Adding Shadows and Sparkle: Use colours like Mauve Shadow, Blue Grey Purple, and the colourless blender to add some shading to the snow hills for depth. Apply shine with the Aqua Nuvo shimmer pen on the snowballs and tops of the snow hills for a sparkling effect.
- Adding snowflakes to the sky: Die-cut some snowflakes from white paper and place them spread across the air.
Following these steps will result in a finished and interactive card perfectly suited for the wintry scene with the adorable penguins.
