Joyce has done it again ...
Delivering some fun 'posers' so we might play Hodgepodge!
BTW. If you don't feel like linking up, I'd love to hear your responses in the comments!
Ready? Ready!
Joyce says, "Find a penny. Look at the date and tell us something about your life or what you were doing that year."
Were you given an allowance as a child? Did you have to earn it in some way? Did you learn to save money when you were a child, or is that something you figured out as an adult?
Yes, I was given $10/week for keeping my room tidy and caring for our dog. However. Between buying Photoplay magazines, and junk food, precious little was left over.
Not until I began collecting SS did Tom and I begin saving in earnest -- to purchase this home, quit my job and relocate across the country. Yes, in that order. All I gotta say is, thank goodness our house in Arizona sold quickly!
April 23 is National Take a Chance Day. What's a chance you need or want to take?
It's high time I quit worrying about the 'what-if's' and start road-tripping again.
I was recently struck silly ... remembering all the times I'd jump behind the wheel and drive to Dallas for the weekend. No cell phone, not even a city map! Nowadays I over-think every little thing.
What's some outdated slang you seem to use a little too often?
Offhand, the only thing I can think of is, "Holy Toledo!"
Okay. I know this is all in fun. But I'm puzzled why so many coming of age'rs are quick to label expressions 'outdated'?
Check THIS out!
(I don't know about y'all, but I still say 'slacks.')
It's National Poetry month and Joyce always likes to make us work our brains a little. "Roses are red, violets are blue ... you fill in the rest with something original.
(Please excuse the grammar!)
Insert your own random thought here.
Tomorrow would be my mother's 106th birthday!
Like many of y'all, I wish I'd asked more questions about her early life.
... in particular her days spent in nursing school: More than a few references she made to smoking cigarettes inside the dormitory's big porcelain tub. Or, on Minneapolis' insufferable Summer nights when they'd drag mattresses out onto the fire escape. I was incredulous, trying to reconcile my docile mother with the vision of a carefree student nurse.
But words don't lie!
Evidence these notes on her hat.
Even her mask! (ca. 1936)
Happy Birthday in Heaven, Mom.
Thanks for the memories!
Hugs, Myra
roses are red, violets are blue, I love coming here, because I am just like you.
ReplyDeletethe only penny i found is 2013 and have no clue about that year, but your penny is the year I was 40 and cleaning up the mess i made out of my life and out of one marrage into Bob marriage. life was good in 1985, but we were poor as church mice, had to sell his 64 cadilac to buy a bed.
i wish i were 40 again. and again and again.
No allowance ever and did not give my boys one either. daddy said you live here you work here, i said the same to David and Daniel.
never used the word slacks, always said and still do pants. as in I WEAR THE PANTS in the family, do you wear the slacks in the family??????
love the photo, the hat and the mask. looks just like the ones people created last year.. daddy would be 108 this year..mama 96. our parents were the same generation.
unfortuantly most of my slang was nice and now is not. like Darn and now Damn,
the travel is so me. when i moved down here, several times a year, one year once a month i drove the 6 hours to Savannah alone all the time, now I am afraid to do it.
Awww, thank you! To be honest, I had to go through a dozen+ pennies to find something that wasn't 2017-18-19-20. I mean, it's all there already on Blogger.
DeleteMy mom and I were talking the other day about how I would drive from university in Tennessee to NJ, about a 9 hour drive, by myself, no phone. We were probably less anxious overall though. Now we start to worry if we don't get an immediate reply to a text. We love a road trip here and have had a couple recently. It feels good to be out!
ReplyDeleteExactly! I can't wait to get out of town.
DeleteHappy Heavenly birthday to your Mom. I don't think we can ever ask too many questions. There are lots I would love to ask my mom too. I always heard find a penny pick it up and you will have good luck. I remember wearing penny loafers with a penny in them for good luck. I think I say, for sure, too often. It's like confirming my thoughts. We have snow in Ohio today. April Fools Day keeps coming, just like Ground Hogs Day.
ReplyDeleteI'd totally forgotten about wearing a penny in one's loafers! Loved that tradition!
DeleteI think when we get older we all tend to over-think things, at least I know I do. Those photos of your moms stuff are amazing, I'm so glad you have them! My youngest son uses really old word all the time. I don't know how he knows all them but he comes out with things we used, my parents used, and even things my grandparents said and he uses them properly and with a straight face. He keeps me laughing so much all the time!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's funny! Maybe others will start emulating him -- and what was old becomes new again.
DeleteEnd first, We always get a kick out of your thoughts, refs, and memories you cast out about your mom & dad.
ReplyDeleteMy slang is new and old just the 'S' word, but I use cool too much also.
Funny thing about my memory, year #s mean little. I have to ask Sherry all the time, 'When did we do this or go there?' She is actually my memory bank, since I have very little.
Always enjoy out visit here.
Sherry & jack, getting ready to hit the road.
Thank you so much! I say 'cool' all the time, too. Safe travels!
Deletewhat a precious piece of memorabilia!! I always love your answers!
ReplyDelete🤗
DeleteSuch "cool" pictures of your mom's nursing hat and mask. Love it. Your poem is cute, but also very true!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cathy!
DeleteLoved your answers, especially realizing you were spiritually bankrupt back in 1985. That took some accountability to admit it and then to think if you wanted to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to think our parents had "lives" before us :) It is neat you have the things of your mom with her career as a nurse. We all wish we knew more about our parents after they passed and we can no longer ask them. You think the younger generation would get it but I know my kids don't ask much about our younger years :)
It took me forever to find a penny LOL but when I found one it was 2015 which was a pretty good year. We were in Prescott, we gained a DIL and found out we would be grandparents in 2016, and we were looking forward to moving down to Phoenix.
Roses are red, violets are blue, the heat is coming soon, that I know to be true.
Have a great day!
betty
I remember those days! Was it really 6 years ago? Do you ever think our blogs' content will serve to answer questions our children may have someday?
DeleteI always enjoy visiting your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love the memories of your mother.
I have lots of memories of my parents too and
wished I would have asked them more questions.
I still say "slacks" once in a while.
Have a great day!

DeleteWhat wonderful keepsakes you have from your dear mom! It is sometimes hard to think of our parents (especially moms) as young and more carefree. I enjoyed your Hodgepodge!! 1985 is when Joe and I got married! A good year for me. xo
ReplyDeletePS... just went to that list! My vocabulary is so out of date. Yes, I still say slacks... and most of the other words that shouldn't be used anymore. LOL
DeleteI no longer worry about my words sounding old. Beats trying to sound like a youngster, not knowing exactly what the term even means! Well, I do use one: epic fail!
DeleteLovely thoughts of love about your mother. Remember that your parents loved you and still do. Prayers for you all.
ReplyDeleteI used to get money from my parents as a child for walking the plank. We did not have a dog!
Keep smiling my friend. A smile says it all. God bless.
Thanks, Victor. Your words are always comforting!
DeleteWouldn't we all love to back back and ask our parents so many questions.
ReplyDeleteLove your answer for #1. I never saved money but after retirement you realize all the money you have wasted over the years. The money was available so we used it. Yes travel is a bit different as we age. I've never said Holy Toledo but it's a good one! Nice poem. Wow, how wonderful that you have that from your mom. (even the mask!)
ReplyDeleteMe, too. We might argue, it's better to enjoy the 'fruits of our labor' while we're young and healthy. Too often I've seen elderly folks on cruise ships, hanging onto their walkers and barely able to get around.
DeleteViolets are blue, roses are red --
ReplyDeletenot a single rhyme comes into my head...
At this point in my life, I'm beginning to wonder if any of my thoughts are worth a penny.
Allowance?
I never received any allowance when I was a child. If I ever had ten bucks a week I would have considered myself a millionaire.
A sweet remembrance of your Mother's birthday.
It's so nice that you still have her nursing mask and hat.
I was close to my mom and we talked a lot - yet I still have many questions that I regret not asking. So much left unsaid...
$10 seems right when I wrote this; but now I'm second-guessing big time. It was probably more like $5.
DeleteI still look at the stars and talk to my mom -- and believe she hears what I have to say.
Wow, love those memories tucked inside her nursing cap. What a treasure. Happy Heavenly birthday to your mother. Mine would be 104 now. I still say slacks too. What else are they, if they aren't jeans? Pants I guess? No. slacks is better. LOL. I still talk about "taping" music or music tapes/cassettes. I used to sing a lot and had a lot of accompaniment tapes. Now there isn't any sound system to play them on. Video tapes too. I know they can be digitalized, but why bother? No one wants to watch them anyway. Allowance? I got an extra nickel with my lunch money if I made my bed. Then I could buy an ice cream after lunch. Lunches were only 25 cents back then. Yes, we are old. LOL.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pam! I'd forgotten the ice cream after lunch! My choice was something we called a 'push up,'
DeleteIn 1985, my son was an adorable one-year-old. I so enjoyed being a mom! Happy Birthday to your sweet mom in heaven, Myra. I know you still miss her.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
🤗
DeletePlease venture out and make that trip to Dallas. I live in Plano and would love to meet you. I recently took a 6-hour (one-way) road trip by myself and loved every minute of it. As I get older, (76) I realize those days may be fewer but let me tell you, I will stop with screaming and throwing fits.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't that be fun? Except, instead of Abilene, I'm now living in Alabama ... some 10 hrs. away. One never knows!
Delete1985, our greatest joy Jeremy Edward was born but I lost my dad, my mom lost her sister Elsie and we lost my Tata Rose. I hade a second neurosurgery and those times were so incredibly difficult but God never left our side. I am excited to hit the road and visit Hannah and Jake again. They are coming in less than two weeks. I could just burst. My sweet girl has been busy ewith CHerry Creek Creation (etsy and Instagram). SHe makes the coolest shadow boxes and I had her make them for Shea and Ella. She has done several for people who lost their beloved pets too. My friend Linda and her Phil made a two week trek to Utah with their daughter, her hubby and nearly three year old son. The visited the National Parks and had a wonderful time. Phil had always wanted to see Zion and Bryce so Tressa and Kraig took them away. There is a school reunion in Aug but PUeblo has such a high rate of the virus and also drug addiction I think I will pass. I want to go where peace and quiet reign supreme. Sigh. Happy Birthday a bit late to your sweet mom in Heaven. I hope you and Tom are having a great week. HUGS
