Favorite Thing I’ve Written

I'm taking part in a 52 Week Blog Challenge. Each week, we're given a different prompt to write about. I'm not going promise that I'll remember to do all 52 weeks, but I'm willing to give it an honest effort. The first prompt of the challenge is “Favorite Thing I've Written (and why)”.

One of the favorite things I've written is not something I've published, but something my brother and I wrote when we were kids…probably between 12 and 14.

Our father was in the military and we grew up overseas but not on a military base, so it was rare that there were other American kids near us for us to play with. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time together. Reading was one of our escapes and we both loved fantasy fiction (Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern; the Dragonlance series, David  Eddings, Robert Jordan, etc). One summer we decided we were going to write our own epic, fantasy story.

I don't even remember what it was about (it had dragons and wizards, though!) – all I remember is that we spent hours each day writing notebooks full of this story. We were able to escape loneliness and isolation and boredom by creating this fanatical world to explore and build. There was only so much Super Mario Bros. and Zelda we could play, after all (I know…everyone is laughing at this now).

I'm sure those notebooks got tossed out during one of the many moves we did – if they even made it that long – but that was one of the best summers I remember.

It’s wonderful that you and our brother found comfort in each other and in writing during some of those lonely times. Being a military kid isn’t easy so finding that escape and losing yourself in magical worlds of your own making is special.

Having spent time overseas I totally understand the need to escape. Even though we lived in an off-base compound there wasn’t any children my age around. Dragons and wizards are so much fun to hang out with. It’s a shame you can’t find the notebooks. My early writing disappeared too after it was decided (later proved erroneous) that I’d never get published.
