Tips To Survive Cold And Flu Season Comfortably

It’s been so cold! I have two little boys that I bundle up each day before they head out to school, and they’ve already had colds this season anyway 😞 It’s no fun for a mom to see her children feeling poorly, so I try to do whatever I can to make them feel better

My younger son tends to develop raspy breathing once the days turn chilly because his little lungs’ airways don’t love the dry winter air. His pediatrician recommends that we keep his airways hydrated with a cool mist humidifier to reduces the inflammation that causes the stridor when he breathes, so we keep a Vicks Humidifier in his room, and it makes all the difference.

We received a Vicks Winter Wellness Care Package with a complete line-up of everything we could need for comfort and relief of cold and flu symptoms…

And the Vicks® Mini Filter Free Cool Mist Humidifier is the star. In fact, we are now in the habit of setting his cool mist humidifier up as soon as the first night we hear hoarse or congested breathing (after making sure with his doctor that he isn’t sick) and keep it on until the frost of cold winter weather has finally melted away for the year. The soothing mist of cool air it produces has completely changed his quality of sleep, and my worries have dissipated (I can’t sleep if I hear what sounds like painful breathing, no matter how much his pediatrician reassures me he is ok).

Vicks also offers a variety of other products that work with our Vicks Humidifier to enhance it, like VapoPads in both menthol vapors and rosemary and lavender vapors to provide soothing comfort, and the Protec Humidifier Antimicrobial Cleaning Fish, a cute little fish that you pop inside the humidifier to kill bacteria, mold, and algae. I was cleaning the humidifier twice a week to prevent that, which is a pain, so now I don’t have to worry so much- the fish keeps cleaning for 30 days.

Tips to get your family through cold and flu season comfortably

1. Get a Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier. This has been a lifesaver for us. My younger son used to struggle breathing at night because he was so congested from the dry air, and even woke up with bloody noses. Once we followed our pediatrician’s advice and put the cool mist humidifier in his room, it all went away. Anyone of any age in the family can struggle with dry winter air, so this would be helpful for everyone.

2. Teach children to wash hands often and to use a tissue when they cough or sneeze, or at the very least sneeze and cough into their elbow until they can get to a sink. Puffs Plus® Lotion tissues keep their cute little nostrils from getting red and rough when they blow and rub on sniffly days.

3. Keep a medicine cabinet stocked with products that relieve cold and flu symptoms. The gold standard for us is Vicks® VapoRub™ Topical Ointment, because I can apply it even if my son is asleep and I hear him coughing, and he loves how it smells.

4. Keep goodies stocked in the kitchen for when they are under the weather. Fruit juice and homemade soup always help when kids aren’t feeling well, and we keep some hot chocolate and cookies around too for mood lifters.

The symptoms of colds and flus can be pretty rough, so being armed with an arsenal that provides comfort and relief will make those times easier for you and your children.
