Can Rico convince Sophie in one short week to stay forever?

AUTUMN MASQUERADE EXCERPT:

“I’m glad I can make a dream come true for you.” He leaned back in his leather swivel chair, and folded his hands behind his head. “Are you attending Judith Steel’s masquerade party?”

She froze. Oh God! “I received an invitation.”

“I’m sure you did. She always raves about you at advertising meetings.”

“Judith’s in the perfect line of work for her personality. She’s a master of the art of persuasion.” Anna reflected on her earlier conversation with the prima donna.

Richard laughed and his onyx eyes gleamed. “You’re right about that. Her advertising campaigns are sheer genius.”

Anna hadn’t seen him laugh in two years. His magnetism pulled on her core.

“Are we finished?” Anna leaned forward to collect her file. She didn’t want to wear out her welcome, and the meeting seemed to be over. Much as she’d love to stay and chat, her personal feelings for him made her self-conscious and uneasy when they were alone together.

Like now.

“If you have a moment, I’d like you to help me figure something out. It’s not business-related. Is that okay?” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his desk and ran long fingers through his thick wavy ebony hair.

He looked good. She had to swallow before she could answer.

“Of course.” Her throat constricted and the words came out in a squeak to her ears, almost choking her.

Closing his eyes, thick lashes brushed his cheeks. She could really get jealous of those lashes. Even the most expensive mascara couldn’t accomplish what nature had given him.

He stood and shoved his hands deep into his pants pockets, then turned and looked out the long windows toward the bay. “In three weeks it’ll be two years since Eva died.” He turned back towards her, eyes downcast, the bags beneath them more visible by the sun shining through translucent glass. He went to the minibar, poured himself a glass of water, and took a drink.

Anna froze. This was very personal. What a relief he was looking away. She squeezed her eyes shut to hold tears at bay.

“I’m getting lonely. In the last few weeks, I’ve wanted to get out and about more. Start living again.” He turned to her. “Is it too soon to start socializing? I want to attend Judith’s masquerade party, but would it be appropriate?”

“Grieving is very personal, so there’s no right or wrong. If you feel restless, you’re probably ready. Every moment is a gift, as you know.” She glanced sideways at Eva’s photo and thought she saw her wink. Anna blinked.

“I often wonder if Eva would still be here, if I’d taken her to New York on that business trip.” His voice sounded far away.

“Or, if you’d flown with her from home, you might have died that day, too.” Anna spoke before considering her words.

“Thanksgiving was hard last year. I’m dreading it next month, so I want to go away.” He set the glass down on the silver tray. “I’m still dealing with legal issues from the crash.”

She remembered that he had rented a ranch house in Montana for Thanksgiving. Their families had arrived, and were together when the news came that Eva’s jet went down somewhere in Montana.

“The legal stuff has been like salt in your wound, and probably kept you from getting on with your life.”

“You’re pretty wise.” He studied her for a moment. “So, will I see you at Judith’s if I decide to go?”

“You might.” Anna stood and smoothed the skirt of her magenta suit before picking up her folder. She didn’t like sounding cryptic and mysterious, but what else could she say? With any luck, he won’t recognize me!

PUMPKINS, GHOSTS & WITCHES, OH MY!

PumpkinsIn September we shift gears—and our energies—from living the external life during spring and summer to a more internal and reflective mode during autumn and winter.

October is the month for the mysterious, spooky, unexplained and downright scary, depending on how far you are willing to go. Some like it magical and some like it horrific.

Pumpkins, ghosts and witches are the themes in October. Nightmares and otherworldly experiences abound. In truth, this was a very sacred time in the ancient calendar. Halloween was the end of the old year and November 1 was the beginning of the new year. The veil between the worlds of the living and dead is always thinnest at this time of the year, and the ancient peoples welcomed advice, insights and prophecy from those who had gone home. Dreams were intense and prophetic.

My maternal grandmother was a witchy woman. She lived in a small town in rural Ireland. One day a strange event took place and it continued off and on for a month. Nana’s bedroom was small, and her bed was pushed up against a corner of the room. When she was in her sixties, she went through a phase where she was afraid to sleep in her room. She claimed once she fell asleep an arm would reach out through the wall and grab her, shaking her in terror out of her sleep and out of the bed. Turning the excitement up a notch, one night the ceiling lamp—a simple thing—literally unhitched itself from the ceiling and instead of just dropping to the floor below, flung itself at high speed toward Nana in her bed—at a good 45 degree angle. The next day she went to church and got a liter of holy water. She splashed it all over her room, rubbed the walls, ceiling and floor, and prayed all day. She never had another supernatural experience, and was not willing to talk about what happened ever again. Maybe she was afraid that by talking about the wicked spirit, she might attract it back.

Autumn Masquerade - SiteMy novella, Autumn Masquerade, is a fun story this time of year. A career woman who has secretly been psychic all her life tries to make sure her two worlds never overlap. When she finds out that the masquerade ball she is working as a psychic is for her boss and co-workers, she wonders how she will be able to keep her secret. Especially from her boss, a widower she’s been in love with since his wife died. Will she manage to keep her secret? Not if his deceased wife has anything to do with it…

Help kick start the Halloween theme by enjoying this blog hop. Stop by the other authors’ websites and have tons of fun! Boo!

The Joys of Spring

SPRING IS IN THE AIRAuthorsBloom2015

To Kiss a Leprechaun - SMFREE GIVEAWAY: One lucky commenter will win a reading copy of my e-book novella, To Kiss A Leprechaun. This spring story is set in Ireland, and is filled with magic, love and adventure.

~~~***~~~
There are more things than an overabundance of pollen in the air at this time of year. In fact, our senses are reborn after the barrenness of winter. Beautiful song birds scouting out locations for their nests chirp and sing for our audible pleasure. Flower fragrances waft on the breeze, and bright flowers bloom for our light-sensitive eyes. It is ‘art by nature’ for those of us who hear and see these wonders.
In the world of food, it is time to put away the heartier fare for a while. Chili, stew, soups and crock pot dinners warm our hearts and bodies during cold weather months.
Now they can be replaced by salads, sandwiches and cold soups. One of my favorite spring meals is quiche, because it is light, fine-flavored and delicious. It’s also easy to bake a few and enjoy them with salad throughout the week.
Below is my favorite quiche recipe, tried and true. It is a healthy but delicious crustless quiche, ideal for those who are cutting back on carbs or are weight conscious. I originally found it on Sally’s Baking Addictions website (wonderful website), and adapted it a little. It is beyond delicious. A crust could easily be added.
Serve a slice of quiche with a tossed green salad, chopped fresh tomatoes, red onion and a dressing of apple cider vinegar and macadamia nut oil. Enjoy these subtle spring flavors.
Do you have a favorite quiche recipe you’d like to share? Please post it in the comments section. One can never have too many quiche recipes.
To be entered to win my ebook, leave a comment on my website with your email address. Best of luck to you!
Bon appetit!
VEGGIE QUICHE WITHOUT A CRUST
Servings: 6 large slices
25 minutes to prepare—1 ½ hours total time involved
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups yellow squash, sliced thinly
  • 1 1/2 cups zucchini, sliced thinly
  • 1 large red or green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves roasted or raw garlic, chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon ground thyme, preferably fresh, chopped fine, otherwise dried herb
  • 3 large eggs PLUS 2 large egg whites extra
  • 3/4 cup skim or whole milk
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2/3 to 1 cup reduced fat shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese blended
  • 2 Tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • OPTIONAL: ½ Teaspoon Tumeric or Curry Powder
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350F.
Warm your skillet over medium heat and spray it with nonstick olive oil spray. After slicing zucchini and squash and chopping the red or green pepper, add them along with crushed garlic and thyme to the pan. Add a little salt and pepper, and save some for adding to the egg mixture. Stir and cook for 5 minutes or until veggies are tender—it might take a little longer. Remove veggies into a bowl to cool, and hand beat the eggs and whites in a bowl separately.
Prep a 9-inch pie pan or square pan with olive oil nonstick spray.
Take the bowl of whisked eggs and egg whites, and add milk, salt, and pepper. Beat until well blended. Arrange veggies in the oiled pan and top with shredded cheese. Top with the egg mixture and sprinkle generously with parmesan cheese.
Quiche will bake for 45 minutes or until it is set. Cool time: 10 minutes on a wire rack. Slice and Serve. Make two and freeze one! Thaw overnight and bake for 20 minutes at 350F.
Snarkology Halloween Blog Hop 2014
My Favorite Halloween Theme…
Autumn Masquerade - SiteWhat a lovely experience to be here with 60 wonderful authors to share the Halloween spirit!
The excitement of Halloween is – for me – definitely about ghosts, the afterlife, and the portals that carry us into their worlds and transport them back into ours.
As a youth, I spent a lot of time in Ireland, at a haunted house owned by my paternal grandmother. The house was set apart on a lonely hill overlooking a small town and the Irish Sea.
Hundreds of years earlier, it belonged to a hanging judge. As you can imagine, being a psychically sensitive child, I was quite terrified when I spent time in that house. There were others there, and Halloween was any and every day of the year.
Christmas SpiritsThe most frightening time was as a teenager of seventeen. I lived in the big city and drove down on Friday afternoons to spend weekends at the (in the meantime) abandoned family demesne.   My heart would be in my mouth as I waited to gather sufficient courage to get out in the dark, on the windswept hill, and open the door of the pitch black ancient mansion. My experiences inside will be written into a novella soon, as yet unnamed.
Thirty years later, I still dream of the house. Sometimes it’s burning, or sometimes I’m living in it. It no longer exists, since my family sold it in the late 1970s and the people who bought it sold it to a contractor. He mowed it down and erected a housing estate on the land.
It’s strange to return, and not see it there, dominating the landscape. Was it a figment of my overactive imagination? If anything, it drove home the concept that everything we know is very fleeting, even if it feels permanent to us.
My Halloween story, Autumn Masquerade, is a novella about a psychic working in the corporate work, hoping to guard her secret. But when the boss’s deceased wife decides to meddle, no secret can remain unshared.
My free giveaway is an ecopy of my other ‘haunted’ story – Christmas Spirits. One lucky winner will be chosen randomly and will receive notice by email, so please visit and leave your email address when you comment. Good luck to everyone, and Happy Halloween!
Authors In Bloom Hop April 2014
Nothing Tastes Better Than Home Grown Food
Authors_in_BloomStore bought produce just doesn’t taste the same as it used to. At first I thought it was my taste buds, but many people I know agree. Do you grow any of your own veggies?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are of summers spent in my grandmother’s Irish garden. She grew cabbage, lettuce, carrots, turnips and parsnips. There was a hot house dedicated to grapes and tomatoes, a hen house where fresh eggs were collected daily, and a wild front field where mushrooms sprang up every night. Off I’d go each morning with a basket over my arm to pick fresh mushrooms the size of my hand. Every meal in that house was a feast, and the simpler the ingredients, the better the meal.
I’ve never trusted myself as a gardener, believe it or not. Every potted plant I’ve tried to grow has died to reinforce my self-doubt. A few seeds I’ve potted grew for a while and looked promising, only to be fried by the Texas sun, or over-watered to death by me. This year, I’ll try again. I want to taste true flavor in my food. I want to know I can do what my grandmother did so well.
Here’s an Irish recipe (serves 4) we often ate at my grandmother’s kitchen table:
COLCANNON (this word was coined from the Gaelic for white headed cabbage)
1 head of green cabbage (organic or home grown would be fab)
8 large potatoes (Idaho potatoes taste most like Irish potatoes)
6 chopped scallions (green onions)
4 oz butter (preferably Kerrygold Irish butter)
8 oz cream, half and half, or whole milk (organic if you can)
A good dash each of salt and pepper
4 eggs, fried (optional) (if you have a hen house, these are the best eggs of all)…
I assume you know how to make mashed potatoes. Don’t use an electric mixer. The best mashed potatoes are hand mashed. Peel, cut, boil, drain and steam the potatoes. Use half the butter and half the cream to whip them into a smooth mash, flavoring with salt and pepper. Add chopped scallions. Cover and let steam.
At the same time you boil the potatoes, add sliced and diced cabbage to a different saucepan of boiling water, boil for about 8 minutes, and drain. Let half the butter melt over it, and steam with the lid on.
Now, blend the potato and cabbage mixtures in one saucepan and mix them well.
We ate big bowls of this mixture with a large tablespoon of butter melting in the center. Although it’s not traditional, each bowl was topped with a fried egg.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. In keeping with my Irish themed recipe, my giveaway for the Authors in Bloom Blog Hop is an ebook copy of To Kiss A Leprechaun.
To Kiss a Leprechaun - SMKindle by Amazon  |  Nook by BN  |  Kobo  |  iBooks  |  Smash Words
Lorcan, Prince of the Leprechauns, has been under an ugly spell for centuries.TRR
A unique event takes place each year on the spring equinox, in the small sleepy town of Glen Kisswish Village, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
Prince Lorcan chooses a village girl to kiss. Her cooperation brings prosperity and wellbeing to the village.
This year Aine Byrne is the lucky one – not!
Aine freaks out at the thought of kissing Lorcan. She’d rather kiss a toad. Besides, she has a crush on another guy. What’s a girl to do? Her village is counting on her as she secretly tries to find a way out of The Kiss.
Only Lorcan’s soul mate can break the curse with her kiss. What are the chances he’ll find his true love when she must have a blend of human, fairy and mermaid blood pulsing in her veins? Added to his problems is the fact that someone wants to make sure he doesn’t find his soul mate.
When Aine disappears into thin air shortly before the equinox, Prince Lorcan calls in all favors, and even agrees to the help of the famous and powerful fairy wizard Menw. Perhaps Aine’s magical Irish Wolfhound, Shags, can sniff her out.
This story is an adventure filled with fantasy, shapeshifting, witches, wizards and all sorts of magic. It carries the subtle message that true beauty is not skin deep, and we should pursue our goals no matter how hard the obstacles appear to be.
To Kiss A Leprechaun is a fine read for St. Patrick’s Day, or any day, and will bring joy to all people who hold Ireland in a special place in their hearts.
Sexy Snippets Feb 2nd – The Sheikh’s Crowning
Sexy_SnippetsThis is my first participation in Sunday’s Sexy Snippets!
Crowning Cover - Site SMI’d like the seven posted sentences to capture your imagination. This excerpt is from my romance novella, The Sheikh’s Crowning.
Staging the Setting:
Princess Yasmine pretends to be Sula, a palace dancer, so the handsome American guest won’t know her identity.
7 Sentence Excerpt:
A soft moan escaped her as his tongue pushed her lips open and slid inside, invading the warmth of her inviting mouth. His hands moved to her slender waist. She thrilled to the touch of him, moving her palms from his shoulders down the wall of his hard chest. Her seductive scent enveloped them as her tongue danced with his, daring to explore.
He pulled her against his chest and slid his hands down the length of her curvaceous back to her well-rounded buttocks. Squeezing them, he pushed himself against her until she moaned, ever so softly.
“I want you, right here and now.” Urgency laced his words.
Love reading this book, it was excellent. Loved the sheiks and the women who capture their
Hearts. Could not put it down. ~~Amazon 5-star review.
My Sexy Saturday Feb 1st Hop
My_Sexy_Saturday_HopMy Sexy Saturday
I’m trying something new, and hope you will enjoy it. This is my first foray into My Sexy Saturday. Several authors I know thoroughly enjoy posting seven words, sentences or paragraphs on this weekly blog hop every Saturday.
To Kiss a Leprechaun - SMPersonally, I like to keep it short because I’m a reader as well as a writer. Here are seven sentences from my novella, To Kiss A Leprechaun.
Aine was totally swept up in his overpowering presence. She wanted him to hold her, to kiss her? He must have bewitched her…
“I want to touch your cheek,” he was reading her thoughts, “but I can’t and I won’t. There can be no physical contact between us until the equinox.”
Aine thought about the book… did she really want to ask about his soul mate? She needed to know.
“This is such a fun book to read. There are more twists and turns than a path to a Leprechauns home! I have to read it again since I read it so fast that I am sure I missed some interesting points.” ~~ Amazon 5-star review.
