I love New Years Resolutions, because I am a total nightmare of a human being.
Nothing is ever good enough for me. In 2014 I changed my full time job three times, always had a part time and a full time job, and had an internship on top of it for six months.
And for some reason, I really thought that I was going to publish an article a month, write a full length traditional novel, and six e-books in addition to all of that other bullshit.
Are you laughing or shaking your head, dear reader? People always do one or the other, you know why?
Because that was clearly bat-shit insane.
This year, I’m trying to get back to non crazy-town-banana-pants aspirations. I’m going to write 600 words a day toward my ebook goals, and 300 words five days a week toward my traditional publishing goals. That’s really not that many daily words. When I have an outline to work with, I hit 1000-1700 words on an average weekday, and might crack 3000 on a weekend if I really get in the zone.
But while it’s a modestly challenging daily goal, it adds up.
It’s 5700 words a week.
It’s 24,700 words a month.
It’s 296,400 words in a year.
It’s a 78,00 word draft of a traditional book.
And depending on which outlines I pull out of the drawer this year, it’s between eight and eleven ebooks, even accounting for minor rewrites and heavy edits.
Even within the constraints of 600 words a day, I have some very cool things lined up for 2015. An erotic horror fairy tale. A paranormal series with it's own manic little world. If everything goes according to plan I'm even hoping to join the Planet Alpha series.
My exciting 2015 plans don't end with books either! Now that I’ve set daily word goals instead of insane big picture goals, it also gives me the freedom to complete the daily goal, and DO SOMETHING ELSE.
Like Yoga, which I’m resolving to do at least once a week in 2015.
Or listening to my insane back log of podcasts, all of which I’m six months behind on.
Or organizing and decorating the place I’m moving into later this year.
This New Years, like all New Years, I have high hopes for what’s to come.
And this year, unlike last year, I might actually be able to keep my REASONABLE GOALS.
