The Great Canadian Blog Bash is on!

The Great Canadian Blog Bash

Happy Birthday Canada!

In honour of Canada Day on July 1st, I’m be partying with other Canadian bloggers in The Great Canadian Blog Bash over the next couple of weeks. If you’re a Canadian blogger, link up your Canadian-themed post and join in with the other party-goers. If you're not Canadian, come check out the party and learn about what makes Canada such a great country and why we’re proud to be Canadians :-)

These are some of my Canadian things…

1. Awesome artists & artisans

I love original art, and I’ve discovered lots of great artists and artisans both here in Ottawa and across the country. Support Canadian artists!

design collage edge Edgewater Studio – Vancouver, BC | FAT Paint – New Westminster, BC | IZM – Edmonton, AB

And I guess a little plug for myself wouldn’t be out of line, seeing as this is my blog and I’m Canadian ;-) Some of my artwork…

2. Awesome ocean – The Maritimes

I’m not exactly a world traveler, but I’ve been to the Rockies and the desert and the US and Europe and both coasts of Canada. And of all the places I’ve been, my very favourite is the Maritimes. The ocean and beaches, the food, the people… Maritimers know how to do it right!

3. Awesome food

There’s not too much I miss about living in Montreal. But I have serious smoked meat envy! I haven’t found a decent smoked meat place in Ottawa in the 15 years that I’ve lived here – that’s a long time to go without good smoked meat! Schwartz’s has been a staple in downtown Montreal for over 80 years. A bit of a dive, but the meat is soooooo good! Vegetarians, look away.,. ;-)

One thing Ottawa does have is Beavertails – YUM! A beavertail is a long, thin, oval-shaped piece of pastry that’s deep fried and then covered with a variety of toppings. I said it was yummy, not healthy ;-)

Imagine a combination of chocolate and vanilla ice cream with white chocolate chunks. chocolate-covered almonds, toffee bits, and peanut butter cups… OK, you got it! Ben & Jerry’s exclusive-to-Canada If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours might be 999,994 flavours short of 1,000,000, but MAN it’s good!

4. Awesome interior design

Being a design blog, I have to end off with some of my favourite Canadian designers. I love Jane Lockhart’s use of colour…

Dawna Jones is a blogger friend and an amazing interior designer. Her home in BC is absolutely gorgeous, and has been featured in House & Home magazine.

  7. Happy Holiday! I know all Americans are glad to learn more about Canada, so bring it on!

    Your Maritime photos are beautiful.

I am wondering why we haven't imported your beavertails. What's not to love? Maybe like the Ben and Jerry's flavor, it has to be enjoyed as an exclusive Canadian product. We'll have to visit. I like that idea.

Thanks for an interesting and pretty post.

    1. A special beavertail was created for President Obama when he was in Ottawa a few years ago - not quite an import, but an American version of a Canadian delicacy :-)

Yes, you SHOULD come visit Canada :-) We're a nice little country :-)

    1. Hi Ann, we live in a great country for sure :-) I know lots of people who love Montreal, but I'm not a fan (sorry!) I just don't like big cities in general. Happy Canada Day to you too!

P.S: Hope you don't mind but I am going to add Laura Secord Chocolate. (Can't live without my fix of the cream filled yolk Easter Eggs. I even stash them away like a squirrel so I do to carry me through the winter season.) ☺

  13. Gorgeous photos! I currently live in the Maritimes and the scenery here is beautiful.

I'm from the Ottawa valley and we had a Beavertails truck parked down at our Marina throughout the summers. I miss them. They aren't healthy but boy are the good!
