Celebrate The Small Things + Movie Remake Blogfest

It's time for the weekly instalment of Celebrate The Small Things, hosted by Viklit over at Scribblings Of An Aspiring Author.

The aim of this bloghop is simple: each Friday we celebrate a small thing from that week. It can be the sun coming out, the cup of tea just when you needed it, your child ate some greens, you finally took that rubbish to the dump, or that you finished a chapter of writing which was difficult.Whatever you like! Sign up on the linky, post a celebration, and GO CELEBRATE with other participants who have signed up. See here for more info.

 This week I'm celebrating the following:

~I completed 2 books by blogger buddies: a dystopian novella/novelette and an anthology of stories and I posted reviews on Goodreads

~My junior choir (grade 1-3) did so well with their Mother's Day song at the Monday morning assembly… do you remember M is for the million things she gave me… that's what they sang…

~I went for a snazzy short hair-cut, complete with short fringe (I last had a fringe when I was about 12 or 13 years old… that's ages ago)

~It felt so good slotting an envelope through the opening into the post box, when I posted a handwritten card…

~My Amazon shopping spree with the $75 gift voucher I won in April, during an A to Z challenge competition…

~INTERNATIONAL BE POSITIVE DAY… as voted by some blogger buddies… want to know more? Go HERE

So what are you celebrating? Please share with us… or sign up for this bloghop!

                                 THE MOVIE REMAKE BLOGFEST

FAME 1980 vs. 2009?

The remake was a disappointment!

It was not as gritty or realsitic as the original.

Nobody dancing on a car to the theme song??? That's not on! Unbelievable… that scene is the "essence" of Fame…

What happened to the leg warmers? I want leg warmers! Give me more leg warmers!!

The absence of that bittersweet feeling during the graduation scene??? *shakes head in disbelief* Give me "body electric"…

I think that I must have been traumatized by the remake, and that's why I can't remember (or don't want to) any other details… rather leave me with the original version stuck in my memory… in this case, ignorance is bliss!

ADDED BONUS – I Will Always Love You has to be amongst one of the best song remakes – original by Dolly Parton and revamped by Whitney Houston.

And now I'm off on a blog-hopping spree! Have a great week-end!

    Oh! I'd totally forgotten about Fame! yes! I totally agree!

  2. Alex J. Cavanaugh on May 17, 2013 at 12:11 pm

    Leg warmers – you're funny.

    Glad you had fun with your $75. I still need to spend my $25 from DL.

    Thanks for participating in our blogfest!

  3. J. A. Bennett on May 17, 2013 at 12:22 pm

    I never saw the orginal or the remake, but now I know which one to avoid!

  4. L. Diane Wolfe on May 17, 2013 at 1:27 pm

    I don't think I've seen either Fame movies.

  5. Carol Kilgore on May 17, 2013 at 2:39 pm

    I didn't see the Fame remake, but I do agree about the song. I love both versions. I just listened  to a remake of Over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy on Yvonne Lewis' blog that was so awesome it gave me goosebumps.

    Happy Weekend!

  6. Tyrean on May 17, 2013 at 4:48 pm

    Wonderful celebrations! Have fun shopping!!!

    Fame was gritty and bittersweet – the remake is like eating cotton candy and should have been called something else.

  7. nutschell on May 17, 2013 at 5:36 pm

    i'll have to check both versions of Fame out 🙂

      @Lynda~ Phew! Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so…

      @Alex~ It's true Alex… there's a shortage of leg warmers in the remake.

      @J.A.Bennett~ Forewarned is forearmed!  🙂

      @L.Diane~ My advice? Check out the original.

      @Carol~ I love Over The Rainbow. Every year, I teach it to my junior choir.

      @Tyrean~ Thanks, I will!  Exactly Tyrean. I think the remake "flop" is partially a result of too much Pop Idols.

      @Nutschell~ Hey Nut, I haven't been by your place in ages. I'll have to remedy that…  🙂

  8. S.Katherine Anthony on May 17, 2013 at 6:45 pm

    Oh Fame… I couldn't even watch the new version after reading the bad reviews and watching a trailer that just didn't demand my attention. I agree, even if I didn't see it, leg warmers are a must!

    Great celebrations, yay for new haircut, completing the two books and for the $75 voucher. Have a great weekend 😀

  9. DiscConnected on May 17, 2013 at 7:09 pm

    I didn't see either fame, but Whitney (RIP) really made Dolly's song her own with that remake.

  10. Lexa Cain on May 17, 2013 at 7:59 pm

    Congrats on the $75 gc for Amazon. Yay! Your A-Z posts were excellent and you deserve the recognition! 🙂

  11. Robyn Campbell on May 17, 2013 at 8:20 pm

    Hey pal! I love this post. Hahaha.(Leg warmers) What did happen to them anyway?  Thanks for the Positive Day shout out. You totally rock, my friend. And the original was fantastic. The remake positively hideous. So sad.

    Congrads on the $75. So cool. xoxo

  12. Mary on May 17, 2013 at 8:47 pm

    You had a good week 🙂 I'm glad to hear it. Aww, your chorus must have been adorable. Do you like the new hair. I've been thinking about getting mine chopped again.

    They made a remake of Fame? Or maybe I just forgot. Some movies should just be left alone. Like, I couldn't believe they remade Footloose. I didn't see it…

  13. Viklit on May 17, 2013 at 9:00 pm

    Enjoy your shopping. And yay to new haircuts! 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on May 18, 2013 at 10:03 am

      @S.Katherine~ Leg warmers go hand-in-hand with Fame…

      @DiscConnected~ Yes, that has to be included amongst the best song remakes of all time…

      @Lexa Cain~ I had a blast spending the money on e-books!

      @Robyn~ Ha! I'm a child of the 80's. The leg warmers bring back lots of "gym memories" too… 🙂

      @Mary Pax~ I'm not really eager to see any remakes of the "musical" movies…

      @Viklit~ Thanks Viklit! I still have some money left. I didn't spend it all… yet… 🙂

  14. Al Diaz on May 18, 2013 at 1:47 am

    Congratulations on all your celebrations. Shopping is always fun! And I'm all the way with you on Fame. The taxi scene was a must. Thanks for participating! 🙂

  15. Maurice Mitchell on May 18, 2013 at 2:03 am

    A goods haircut can make all the difference Michelle and I glad I haven’t seen Fame!

  16. LD Masterson on May 18, 2013 at 2:26 am

    Yup on Fame (gotta have legwarmers) and on I Will Always Love You.  Good picks.

  17. Nancy LaRonda Johnson on May 18, 2013 at 4:08 am

    I haven't seen the remake. I saw the first one several years ago, and boy how cheesy it is now. But back then, it was IT!  🙂

  18. Medeia Sharif on May 18, 2013 at 6:58 am

    I didn't know Fame had a remake. I remember the grittiness of the original and loved it.

  19. Carolyn Brown on May 18, 2013 at 8:11 am

    Yes, I want to know where the leg warmers went to, too?

  20. Rhonda on May 18, 2013 at 8:48 am

    I did wonder what was wrong with the new Fame – glad you pointed out the leg warmers.  🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on May 18, 2013 at 11:02 am

      @Al Diaz~ I knew I was right about the taxi scene *high-5*   🙂

      @Maurice Mitchell~ "They" say that a change is as good as a holiday… and I don't think the "holiday" part is happening anytime soon, so I settled for the haircut…

      @L.D.Masterson~ thanks for the double thumbs-up!

      @Nancy LaRonda~  From a 2013 point of view, you are right about the "cheesy factor"… LOL But I remember clearly what an impact it made at that time…

      @Medeia~ Believe me, you don't want to see the remake. NO GRIT.

      @Carolyn~ I think the leg warmers were replaced by tights? Or modern leotards?

      @Rhonda~ Lots of things are wrong with the new version…  leave it at that. 🙂

  21. Lara Lacombe on May 18, 2013 at 10:31 pm

    Hooray for new books and old-fashioned letters! 🙂

  22. Donna K. Weaver on May 19, 2013 at 2:06 pm

    Yours isn't the first post to express unhappiness with the Fame remake. Seriously. Why do filmmakers keep thinking they can be successful?

  23. Susan Gourley on May 19, 2013 at 2:58 pm

    I didn't see the new Fame but I loved the old one. I didn't do a song remake comparison but the only one I thought of was the one you mentioned.

  24. Sherry Ellis on May 19, 2013 at 3:27 pm

    I'd love to see your new haircut.  I bet it looks cute!

  25. Brandy on May 19, 2013 at 3:33 pm

    $75 in FREE books?! I'd say that's something to celebrate! I just love reading all of these "small" things that people have to celebrate. I'm so glad I signed up 🙂

  26. Meradeth on May 19, 2013 at 4:06 pm

    Sounds like some very nice good things this week! Now I'm wondering if I've even seen the original, or remake, of Fame…hmm, off to IMDB to look that up 🙂

    • Michelle Wallace on May 20, 2013 at 4:39 am

      @Lara~ Handwritten notes are special… I wonder if many people write letters these days?   🙂

      @Donna~ I think they run out of ideas…

      @Susan~ That song was a huge hit for Whitney/Dolly… no#1 for weeks and weeks…

      @Sherry~ It's snazzy… and I added a few reddish streaks…

      @Brandy~ Congrats to your Academic Superstardom!   🙂

      @Meradeth~ If you really want to watch it, check out the original… 🙂

  27. Tracy on May 19, 2013 at 5:01 pm

    Great post and great idea…celebrating the small things. Congrats on winning the gift card! 🙂

  28. melanie schulz on May 19, 2013 at 5:43 pm

    Sounds like you had a very busy (and wonderful) week!

  29. Leslie Rose on May 19, 2013 at 5:53 pm

    I avoided the remakes of both Fame and Footlose since I ADORED the first versions of each. Amazon shopping sprees are my happy place.

  30. Rekha on May 19, 2013 at 6:54 pm

    Hi Mish,
    Thanks for remebering me. Never seen fame but that song by Whiney is my fav. Glorious voice but a sad ending.

    Have a great week ahead and catch on on GOodreads when I log in next.

  31. Nas on May 19, 2013 at 7:27 pm

    I need to watch these movies! Good luck with your shopping!

  32. Ciara Knight on May 19, 2013 at 8:57 pm

    I never watched the remake of Fame. I can't believe they even attempted it. 🙂

  33. Stina Lindenblatt on May 20, 2013 at 3:34 am

    You can buy a lot of ebooks for $75. 😀

    I can't remember if I've watched the remake of FAME.

  34. Michelle Wallace on May 20, 2013 at 12:58 pm

    @Tracy~ Celebrating The Small Things is a weekly meme… you should sign up…  🙂

    @melanie~ Yes, it was wonderfully busy…

    @Leslie~ Wise idea to avoid the remakes… I'll know for future reference…

    @Rekha~ One of the best voices in the industry, for sure… but a tragic ending… what a waste…  🙁   Oh, and don't be a stranger… keep in touch!  🙂

    @Nas~ Thanks Nas… I still have some money left…

    @Ciara~ I think that Hollywood producers run out of ideas… and then "grab at straws" trying to come up with the next big thing…   🙂

    @Stina~ You can certainly buy lots and lots of e-books with $75… there are some that cost only $2.99 and others are $0.99… real bargains…   🙂

  35. Hart Johnson on May 20, 2013 at 2:53 pm

    Oh, good gratitude list… and yeah, Fame would not be Fame without legwarmers!  Had to giggle about your assessment, but yeah… Fame's real draw was that at the time it was a first peak at that sort of thing. By the remake, it was overdone–I'm not sure they could have hit it right.

    • Michelle Wallace on May 20, 2013 at 10:02 pm

      You're so right about that. By the remake, there was also the Idols influence… it's so obvious in the final scene…

  36. Elise Fallson on May 20, 2013 at 9:55 pm

    I saw several people name Fame as their wost remake. I'll certainly won't waste my time watching it. And I bet you look fabulous with your new hair cut and fringe. Doesn't if feel great to get a new hair style? (:  Will I get to see it in person anytime soon? (;

    • Michelle Wallace on May 20, 2013 at 10:03 pm

      Hey E! I'm really enjoying the new haircut… 🙂 You may possibly get to see it… will fill you in… 🙂

      • Elise Fallson on May 24, 2013 at 1:40 pm

        (;

  37. Trisha on May 23, 2013 at 11:45 am

    I haven't seen any versions of Fame! But I love Whitney's take on that song.

    • Michelle Wallace on May 25, 2013 at 7:18 am

      Whitney remains one of my all-time-favourite female vocalists!

  38. Cathrina Constantine on May 24, 2013 at 11:05 am

    It sounds like you had a pretty decent week. A short haircut would be nice and easy, though, not yet for me. I loved the movie Fame, the original. I never did see the remake, thanks for the warning.

  39. Michelle Wallace on May 25, 2013 at 7:21 am

    I would suggest that you avoid the remake, you're in for a major disappointment. Though it's a subjective POV because some people loved the remake.

  40. Deanie Humphrys-Dunne on June 1, 2013 at 8:57 pm

    I hope everyone has lots to celebrate next time. This week we're celebrating getting our lawn cut after it had been growing for 3 weeks! It was looking like a hay field. Now we don't have to rent a goat to trim it. Hooray! Happy weekend everyone.
