Genre Favorites Blogfest

The Genre Favorites Blogfest is hosted by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and the rules are simple:
One blogfest, four favorites!
List your favorite genre of:

Movie
Music
Books
And a guilty pleasure genre from any of the three categories!

My favorites:

Movies: Fantasy
I was going to say Science Fiction for this category . . . but then I realized that a lot of my favorite movies (The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter) are Fantasy. I've seen more Fantasy than SF.

Music: Classical
I do like some contemporary music. But classical is the type I can listen to non-stop, and there are so many amazing composers/works that have emerged over hundreds of years.

Books: Science Fiction
Would you believe I used to somewhat avoid SF? I'm not really sure why . . . but most of my reading was Fantasy/Contemporary before I began writing my first novel, which was inspired by a Science Fiction book. And now I'm a bit obsessed with the genre.

Guilty Pleasure: Books: Young Adult Dystopian
I suppose you could put this under Science Fiction, but Dystopian (particularly YA Dystopian) has its own distinct traits. The genre can be very formulaic, predictable, and after reading too much of it I begin to feel like the future is a mire of hopeless politics and oppression (not to say that current events are full of sunshine and optimism, of course), but I do enjoy the character development that usually comes with the protagonist's refutation of their world's rules.

What's one of your favorite genres from the above categories?

You had me at dystopian.

Nancy Thompson said...

I love classical, too, piano concertos mostly. But YA dystopians make me want to yank out my hair by the roots!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

And now you are reading as well as writing science fiction, which is cool.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

Morgan said...

Loooooove classical...

And I like some dystopians! :)

Allison said...

Great choices! That is neat that you write sci-fi now, too.

prerna pickett said...

i love sci-fi and fantasy everything!

Pat Hatt said...

Yep sci-fi and fantasy are grand, but many a movie is liked in my land.

Anthony Hopper said...

Nice list...I would love to see movie studios focus more money/time on creating great sci-fi/fantasy movies. I mean, the superhero movies (which I guess count as fantasy) are great and all...but that genre has been overdone. I'd rather see a space opera (another Star Wars type of movie) than the tenth reboot of a famous superhero.

S. L. Hennessy said...

Yeah, I definitely have a lot of movie favorites in the fantasy genre. I mean, LOTR and Harry Potter are some of the best book to film adaptations I've ever seen.

And I love classical music. It's what I write to a lot.

Emily R. King said...

I agree that I watch more Fantasy than Sci Fi. I thought it was the other way around, too. But I watch more rom-coms than anything. :)

mshatch said...

I picked scifi for movies; there's just too many I can warch over and over whereas a drama I watch once and that's it. Like your picks :)

Maurice Mitchell said...

Classical music soothes the soul Golden Eagle.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, is Time Travel considered sci/fi or fantasy?

Mike said...

nice list, I need to listen to more classical

Old Kitty said...

Classical music!!! Yes please!!! And what personalities too!!

Take care

Jessica Salyer said...

Great choices. I have to try to read sci-fi a little more.

Brinda said...

I'm a fan of YA dystopian.

Nicki Elson said...

It's true that good character development can make even a formulaic book worthwhile.

M Pax said...

Sci-fi is good stuff. I do enjoy classical music, too, especially Bach.

Unknown said...

YA dystopian is a good one to pick. Have you read Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking trilogy? It's fantastic!

Dystopian is like election year. So I stay away from even the news.

Hugs and chocolate,
Shelly

Jai Joshi said...

I adore classical too. I've probably spent more time listening to that than anything else, although I like rock and alternative etc. But classical just soothes the soul.

I do like some dystopian, but I can get saturated with it easily.

Melissa said...

I'm finding I like dystopian, too. In fact, I'm plotting one. LOL

Thanks for visiting my blog. :)

Science fiction seems to be popular today. I like some classical music also, especially with brass featured

Suzi said...

I haven't read a lot of dystopians since I usually stick to contemporary. But I enjoy them because they tend to be darker.

D.G. Hudson said...

I jumped from fantasy to science fiction in my reading.

Science fiction and suspense is what I write, however.

Dropping by to visit as part of the blogfest at Alex's.

Tamara said...

I haven't read a ton of sci-fi, which is funny--because both books I've writtten are pretty much light sci-fi. (Heavy on the light) haha.

And I really like YA dystopian. You're right, it can be a bit formulaic, but it's almost always a fun, exciting ride. :)

M.J. Fifield said...

I love fantasy movies and classical music. I was never much of a sci-fi fan until Firefly and Battlestar Galactica (the syfy series)came along.

DMS said...

Great choices! I love fantasy movies and dystopian books. :)

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Except for music, we're a lot alike. YA dystopians do sometimes seem to follow too close to a blueprint.

Cindy said...

We sure have a lot of the same answers. So great choices, of course. :)

Jay Noel said...

I'm a big SF fan. But I'm finding myself checking out more dystopian and fantasy too.

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Ha, and I thought you'd pick scifi for movies. And I do enjoy YA Dystopians.

Isis Rushdan said...

I love classical as well. I'm listening to even more of it these days with my baby.

Denise Covey said...

My fave from your list is classical music. I love to listen to it in the car especially. I'm lately arrived at fantasy and have begun to write it with my writer's group.

Duncan D. Horne - the Kuantan blogger said...

I love both action movies and books. Something that keeps me on the edge of my seat!

Maryannwrites said...

I don't favor any of the genres you mentioned except classical music, although I don't listen to it exclusively.

Jennifer Lane said...

Great choices! I haven't read much science fiction but I do like YA dystopians. Happy reading.

Angela Brown said...

Yay for YA dystopian as a guilty pleasure. I'm still lurking about searching for more to read..and yeah, writing my own YA dystopian lol!!

Great responses :-)

I like fantasy. I'm very eager for The Hobbit.

Scott Westerfeld is brilliant. A very wonderful author.

Thank you for the follow and comment. I know I will enjoy your blog!

Lately I have been all about the Young Adult Dystopian novels too.

Shallee said...

I'm a big fan of dystopian too, especially when the writer pulls in some unique world detail or really develops the characters!

Patricia Stoltey said...

Dystopian novels have been high on my reading list lately as well. Must be a sign of the times.

dolorah said...

I like fantasy and sci-fi books and novels. And classical music is nice - especially when I'm writing. Helps with concentration.

I love YA dystopia (or any dystopia, really). Do you have any faves that you can recommend?

DWei said...

Humor, anything with piano and humor. :P

Susan Fields said...

I do love a good YA dystopian, though I'm leaning more towards mysteries at the moment.

Huntress said...

All around super choices. Classical is one of my faves also.

Awesome choices, especially sci-fi! :D

Cate Masters said...

Lord of the Rings is a longtime fav. Great choices!

Movies, SF

Music, Heavy metal/hard rock

Books, impossible to pick just one.

Ooh, that's a toughie.

My favourite genres .....
Movie - Comedy.
Music - Ooh, too eclectic to list.
Books - Historical.

Guilty pleasures ......
Movie - Spoofs (Scary Movie etc)
Music - Those annoying songs that get on every ones nerves and yet you can't help but sing them.
Books - True Life stories.

Ellie Garratt said...

Superb choices. YA Dystopian is fast becoming my second favourite genre. Not by chance am I writing one myself!

Cheryl Klarich said...

I'm enjoying the Tales of the Goldstone Wood series by Ann Elizabeth Stengl... I think it's more fantasy/allegory... really wonderful, though!

Lauren said...

Ha, I know what you mean about dystopian stories becoming a little depressing after a while - I tend not to read too much of it for that reason. It is fun, though. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier!

Cherie Reich said...

I do love classical music. And YA Dystopian is a lot of fun to read.

Jess Stork said...

I think there's some overlap between Sci-fi and fantasy, so it makes sense that you would like both. Both genres see how far you can take the power of imagination.

Krispy said...

My favorite movie genre is Fantasy too, though I probably watch a lot more Sci-Fi-ish things. I feel like Hollywood tends to go for future-fic more often than straight up fantasy, but both are fun to watch on the big screen. :)

Guilty pleasure - it's not really guilty, but I'm addicted to crime dramas. They're all pretty formulaic and some of them are only so-so, but I love watching them. :P

Golden Eagle said...

Joshua: It's an interesting genre!

Nancy: I love listening to concertos. Particularly Mozart. :)

Alex: I certainly enjoy writing SF!

Thank you for hosting. I've had a lot of fun visiting participants.

Morgan: Guess we have something in common there. :)

Allison: Thank you!

Prerna: Same here. Or anything that's speculative, really . . .

Pat: I tend to read in a wider range of genres as opposed to watching movies, but I try not to limit myself to SF/F exclusively.

Anthony: I agree. The industry repeats itself quite often.

S. L.: Classical encompasses such a range of moods and atmospheres. :)

Emily: I don't tend to watch rom-coms . . . I'm picky about the movies I watch and since most of them are based off of books I've read, most of it's SF/F.

Mshatch: Thanks. Glad you liked them!

Maurice: Definitely. :)

Mywithershins: It depends on who you talk to. There are SF writers who will staunchly oppose its inclusion in SF and others who think it does belong in the genre.

Mike: There's a lot of classical music in the public domain; I often visit YouTube if I'm looking for good music. :)

Old Kitty: I agree--it covers a lot of different types.

Jessica: Thanks!

Brinda: I like reading it every once in a while. Too much and I feel overloaded; but they can be quite enjoyable.

Nicki: Character can really boost a story!

Mary: Bach is one of my favorite composers. :)

Jamie: Yes! I loved it--one of the best YA trilogies I've read.

Golden Eagle said...

Shelly: It can be. There's an awful lot of politics in them, usually (I tend to like politics in fiction).

Jai: Agreed. :)

Susan: Me, too. For me, it's because of all the doom and gloom . . .

Melissa: Good luck with your Dystopian! :)

Enjoyed stopping by your blog.

Heather: Brass is wonderful. Have you ever listened to Maurice André?

Suzi: I like some dark fiction as well.

D.G.: I love writing Science Fiction the most. The world-building is a big draw for me.

Tamara: That could be a good thing--you're free from influences within the genre that way. :)

M.J.: I have to watch those series sometime. I keep seeing them all over the place.

Jess: Thanks!

Awesome. :)

Susan: I wrote a YA Dystopian and got that impression very strongly after I'd written it. I have to go back and revise it sometime . . .

Cindy: Thank you! I'll have to head over and check out your post.

Jay: All Speculative Fiction is awesome.

Lynda: LOL. Nope, though it was a close decision!

Isis: That's wonderful. :)

Denise: Same here! It's not too distracting but fills up the quiet.

Duncan: I love action/adventure. So thrilling.

Maryann: Neither do I. But it's definitely my top favorite music genre.

Jennifer: Thanks!

Well, some people do classify that as SF. :)

Angela: Good luck with your writing! If you want a good Dystopian title, I'd highly suggest the Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness. :)

Thank you.

Miss Jack Lewis Baillot: Same here. I haven't anticipated a movie this much since HP!

You're very welcome. Thanks for visiting The Eagle's Aerial Perspective!

Kari: It's an interesting genre.

Shallee: I agree. The world-building in Dystopian can be amazing.

Patricia: Suppose so! :)

Donna: I find it helps me concentrate, too.

Golden Eagle said...

Insomniac #4: The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness; The Giver by Lois Lowry; Legend by Marie Lu. Those would be the top ones I'd recommend off the top of my head. :)

DWei: I remember your post about liking music with piano. I play the piano, so I definitely like music with it.

Susan: Mysteries are great to read!

Huntress: Thank you! :)

Jackie: Thanks!

Cate: LOTR seems to be a popular choice in the blogfest.

Tara: Thank you.

Beth: True, it is. Especially with the rise of books along the lines of a certain bit of fiction named after a particular color . . .

Connie: Old ones are fun to watch. :)

Jazz is also one of my favorites!

Michelle: Beethoven is a great composer. I'm actually working on a movement from one of his sonatas right now.

Charles: SF--doesn't surprise me. And I remember your posts about music. :)

Petty Witter: LOL. I know what you mean by annoying songs . . . I had Call Me Maybe stuck in my head for far too long.

Ellie: Thanks!

Awesome that you're writing one.

Cheryl: Sounds like an interesting book! I've never heard of the author or title before.

Lauren: I can't take too much depressing; I like reading something a bit lighter after digging into a Dystopian or Contemporary Fiction book.

It was great to read your entry. :)

Cherie: Yup.

Jess: I love that element of speculative fiction.

Krispy: Agreed. And the SFX are getting a lot better, which makes it even more interesting.

LOL. I've found myself watching crime drama recently in the form of Sherlock; not a genre I frequent, but I'm breaking my habit for the series because I love the character of Sherlock Holmes.

Hmm... Science fiction, fantasy, country, in no particular order, and - I can't really think of an entire genre that's a guilty pleasure for me in books or movies. Maybe prime-time soap television, or cheesy paperback fantasy like Piers Anthony.

I've tagged you for a Blog meme! http://kelworthfiles.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/hopping-on-the-be-inspired-meme/

I enjoy dystopian and fantasy, as well. Even sci-fi, but to a lesser degree (well, it depends upon how in-depth they get into the science).

My Genre Favorites & Guilty Pleasures

Lauren said...

I'm with you on the sci-fi/fantasy. What I like is that you can remove the mundane of our reality and people are still people. They are just dealing with different external pressures, but internally and inter-relationally, they have the same wants and needs as anyone else.

I'm not much of a movie person. I perfer TV series. I guess I'm a nut for characters because I like TV's ability to really dig into a character, which you can't in a 90-minute movie, or at least not as much.

Also, Classical Music is the best writing music, IMO :)

Golden Eagle said...

Kelworthfiles: I had a hard time choosing a "guilty pleasure", too. If I like something, I'm usually fine with telling people I like it. :P

Shannon: I love SF that really digs into the science . . . technical information appeals to me.

Lauren: I agree! There's room for imagination but the stories are also very human.

I've been watching more TV shows recently and yes, it does allow for more character growth.

Agreed. :)

Trisha said...

Nice answers, only just got around to reading them :) This was a fun blogfest!

Trisha: Thanks for coming by. :) I've been visiting Genre Favorites entries recently, too . . . so many participants.

I am impressed with your passion for classical music, other than Bach and string quartets I find it quite difficult listening. I know you listen to it in a different way to other music, its the same with jazz, you have to develop an ear for what is being said.
