We need more Health Workers

You might have read recently about the "No child born to die" campagin and petition by Save the Children, this was trying to get vacinnes to save lives for children in poorer countries.
Please take a few minutes to sign the latest petition calling for more healthcare workers.

Doctors, nurses and midwives are vital to saving children’s lives. But there's a massive shortfall of health workers in the world’s poorest countries. As ever, the poorest and most vulnerable are hardest hit.
Half of the 8 million children who die each year are in Africa, yet Africa has only 3% of the world’s doctors, nurses and midwives.

Many of us take for granted the National Health System we have here in the UK.  Whether it be midwives helping to safely deliver babies, health visitors who offer help, advice and support to new parents, GPs and clinics who treat illnesses and ailments and immunise our children, accident and emergency staff, cancer nurses, screening clinics and nursing staff.  Healthcare professionals are there through every step of our lives.

Michelle at Mummy from the Heart , a nice blog I read, has set us bloggers a challenge. To unite us and show our government and the world that we have a voice and we think that every child deserves the best chance in life.

Chris at Thinly Spread is currently in New York with Save the Children.  On Tuesday she will be at the UN fighting for the rights of 10s of thousands of people who do not have a voice.  The hope is that by Tuesday, 100 UK bloggers will have written a post like this, and written 100 words about a health worker who has made a difference in their life.

So here I am, Scribbling my 100 ish words......

After the birth of my first child I was sent home, I knew something was wrong but I couldn't explain how. Five days after my son was born I was in the shower when it was like somethng exploded, blood everywhere and pain, instantly dizzy. My memory fades fast from there. I heard my partner shout to his Nan he was phoning 999 then he said "F$%^ that, she won't make it, I'm taking her Grandma". Not normal for him to swear at his Nan, stress! Next thing I remember I am over his shoulder being run to the car, scared as hell.
Ok, my partner was faster than the ambulance would have been that day, and that could well have made a difference, BUT if we lived in a poorer country with less doctors and hospitals all the quick thinking in the world would not have saved me.
I remember clearly talking half the night to a midwife who was assigned to me and my son (I was determined, ill or not, I was breastfeeding!) - the conversation and her time was greatly recieved as I was just so damn scared. I could not move from fear to be honest with you all. When I finally thought I could no longer fight bodies desire to sleep I turned to my Five day old son and told him he was worth dieing for, that I loved him immensely, and to look after his Daddy.
I was amazed I woke up, but greatful to that midwife checking on me regularly, ready to rush me into surgery or whatever if it got worse. In a poorer country would my son have a Mother???

Please, if you can spare a few moments, sign the petition. If you are a blogger, join in, help Save the Children really push this petition.
