Right here in Boulder, Colorado, as of October 11, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley has had 1716 animals – 911 dogs and 805 cats – adopted since August 1. That’s an increase of 652 adoptions for this same time last year! And, that means BVHS is currently in 1st place for the “Save More Lives ASPCA $100K Challengesponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)! (HSBV also had 192 dogs and 87 cats reunited with their guardians with their Lost & Found program.)

The Challenge requires participating shelters to save the lives of at least 300 more cats and dogs between August 1, 2010 and October 31, 2010 when compared to the same period in 2009. The Humane Society of Boulder Valley is one of 50 shelters across the nation chosen to compete. You can read more about the Challenge here. The winner will be announced on December 8.

You can see all of the competing shelters listed in the Contestant Leaderboard. It’s an impressive list and when you add up the numbers, 4,772 more pets have been saved in August and September of this year compared to last!

Read what Bert Troughton had to say about BVHS on the ASPCA’s blog:

As I pore over the Challenge blogs, I’m struck, over and over again, by the ingenuity and creativity of our contestants. But even more than that, I’ve been struck by their sheer determination.

Just look at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. It’s no accident that they’re at the top of the Leader Board. They didn’t miss a beat in spite of the outbreak of the Fourmile Canyon Wildfire at the beginning of September and the need to jump in and care for displaced animals—and provide basic supplies to people who were driven out of their homes. That very same weekend, the folks at Boulder waived fees on 100 cats and ended up with the second biggest adoption day in their 108-year history—now that’s determination.
