Kiku Corner has has a new knitting pattern!

We named the Riyadh Cowl and Hat after the city of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Meinhilde and I lived there with our family during our tween and teenage years, for almost a decade.

Our old house in Saudi Arabia inspired the stranded knitting design. Our villa there had ornamental window coverings that featured a repeating eight-point-star and diamond pattern. When the sun would shine through our windows, it would cast a decorative shadow onto our bedroom floors. We recreated a similar pattern from memory which makes this beautiful cowl and hat.

The Riyadh Cowl and Hat pattern works best in a high-contrast variegated yarns, such as Artfil Sweater, a worsted weight yarn in 100% extra fine merino wool. The pink hat and cowl above uses one skein of Artfil Sweater in Pink and one in Purple.

The Riyadh Cowl and Hat pattern is available on Ravelry and in our Etsy shop. It’s our third independently published pattern (after our Tucson Hat and Berlin Hat). Meinhilde and I decided to name all our patterns after cities. We feel this reflects our multicultural heritage and upbringing, and our love of travel.

The Riyadh pattern includes instructions for both a cowl and an adult sized hat. The cowl has a small and larger size, one using worsted weight yarn, the other using fingering weight yarn. The hat fits a taller head, but if you have a smaller head like me, you can remove 10 rows of ribbing before you start the colourwork chart. To knit this adult hat, I used 4.5 mm needles for the ribbing and 5.0 mm needles for the crown.

Happy knitting!
