The Cat On My Head

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCXXXII

It is Tuesday, so Stinky is anxiously waiting by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle’s arrival. He is unsure about the plan for their adventure and whether or not Periwinkle will enjoy it. He doesn’t have long to brood about it, as the teleportation tunnel starts to vibrate, and Periwinkle pops out with the usual whoosh. Stinky catches her in his paws and they share some whisker kisses.

After several minutes of catching up on the week’s events, Stinky leads Periwinkle back into the teleportation tunnel.

Virginia Tech – Blacksburg, Virginia

Their trip is an especially quick one. They are only traveling about 40 miles from Stinky’s house to Blacksburg, Virginia, and the campus of Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). Of, course, Periwinkle has no idea where they are but is impressed by all the big buildings.

Stinky leads her to a huge grassy area, which he says is called the Drill Field. They stand in front of 32 stones, each carved with the name of a person. Confused, Periwinkle asks Stinky what the stones are for.

Stinky, explains, “This is the anniversary of the death of 32 individuals here on campus on April 16, 2007. Most were students and five were members of the Tech faculty. They ranged in age from 18 to 76. These markers are for each of those individuals.”

“Oh Stinky, that is absolutely heartbreaking,” replies Periwinkle as she wipes a tear from her fur. “How did they die?”

“A lone gunman, using two semi-automatic pistols, murdered them. Seventeen others were wounded, and six people were injured jumping out of windows to escape the gunman. I will not share his name. I don’t think individuals who commit these senseless crimes should be remembered.”

Periwinkle nods her head in agreement.

“He actually was a 23-year-old Senior here and lived on campus,” Stinky tells her.

“Stinky, I think it is terrible that people can be so mean and hurt and kill others like this,” replies Periwinkle.

“Two students were killed in one of the dormitories and the 30 others in Norris Hall where the shooter chained closed the main entrance doors. The individuals were killed in four classrooms and the stairwell. The assailant shot himself in the head as police were entering the building. His death is number 33, but he is not remembered here in any way,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“Well, that’s exactly how it should be,” replies Periwinkle.

Stinky tells Periwinkle, “This was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. For nine years it remained so, until the Orlando, Florida, nightclub shooting. It remains the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history and the deadliest mass shooting in Virginia history.”

“That isn’t a very good distinction to have, is it, Stinky?”

“No, Periwinkle, it surely is not. But I think we should all pray that any future events of this kind, and I know there will be some, will not be worse.”

“I know lots more school shootings have occurred in the past 17 years, and the thought that this kind of violence continues makes me very sad,” Periwinkle says.

The Memorial

Dedication of the permanent memorial took place in a ceremony on August 19, 2007, four months and three days after the massacre. Thirty-two pieces of Hokie Stone*, each labeled with the name of a victim, were set in a semicircle in front of the Drill Field viewing stand. (See first photo.) The memorial plaque is behind the hedge row.

*Hokie Stone is a grey dolomite/limestone rock found near Blacksburg. Its name comes from the traditional nickname attributed to students and alumni of Virginia Tech. The stone is quarried by Virginia Tech for campus projects and is displayed on the majority of buildings throughout the campus.

Remembering

“Stinky, do you think we could just sit here quietly for a little while to remember these individuals?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky replies, “Of course!”

After sitting silently and reflecting, the tabbies walk around the semicircle of stones reading each of the names.

Stinky Cannot Help Himself

“Periwinkle, do you see that huge tree with the squirrel’s nest?” asks Stinky.

“Periwinkle replies warily, “Yes, why?”

“I know this is a solemn occasion, but that is a magnificent climbing tree, and I really would like to get a better look at that nest.”

“Stinky, are you actually asking if it is okay with me for you to climb the tree?”

“Well, sort of, I guess,” Stinky says sheepishly.

With an exasperated look on her face, Periwinkle nods her reluctant approval. Before she can change her mind, Stinky scampers up the tree. Periwinkle is relieved that he does not try to go to the very top.

Two cartoon tabby cats, one on the ground and one sitting in a large tree on the campus of Virginia Tech.

“Okay, Stinky, time to get down. Your mom told me you have been having seizures on Tuesdays after our adventures. If you fall out of that tree on your head, I am going to be in big trouble and so are you.”

Stinky climbs down very slowly, and the tabbies head to the teleportation tunnel for the trip back to Srinky’s house.

Back at Stinky’s House

When they arrive at Stinky’s, the tabbies tell the other Kitties Blue about their adventure. They also talk to Stinky’s mom and dad about the event. Dad Tom and Mom Janet cannot explain why human beings commit such heinous acts when Stinky and Periwinkle ask. Disappointed at not being able to understand, they decide to take some time to think about what they learned and saw today. Then they ask to have snacks on the catio. All the Kitties Blue and Periwinkle enjoy their noms. With everyone’s mouths full, it becomes very quiet.

Finally the time arrives for Periwinkle to return home. The tabbies spend several minutes paw hugging and whisker kissing. Finally, with a wave and blown kiss, Periwinkle enters the tunnel. With a whoosh she is hurtling home. Stinky retires to the catio for a nap and dreams of Periwinkle.

Sparks

I wanted a Spark about resolve, and this quote from Helen Keller spoke to me loud and clear. I knew immediately it was the Spark I had to share.

Sparks is the creation of Annie from McGuffy’s Reader. It began as a blog hop, created by our friend. Annie stated when she began Sparks, “I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world.”

The Adventures of Periwinkle & Stinky

That’s right, tomorrow is the special day when Periwinkle and Stinky set out on a new adventure. Stinky has a plan in place and is all ready for Periwinkle’s arrival. Your favorite tabby adventurers will be looking for you tomorrow. So, please don’t forget to check in here to find out what they get up to and into!

Thanks for joining us today.

THE ACCOMMODATING CAT

Sunday Selfies: Week #504

I am fortunate Kizmet is a most accommodating cat. She agreed at 10:15 p.m. to snap a selfie. She did an incredible job. It helps that she’s extremely photogenic. And she is always happy to pose!

Accommodating Cat: Portrait of a grey cat with green eyes in a green frame with white, yellow and orange flowers.

Kizmet will be looking for your selfie on the hop as will I and the remainder of the Kitties Blue. If you cannot come by today, that’s A-OK. The hop remains open through Thursday. If you would like to encourage some of your friends, who may not know about our hop, to join us, that would be terrific!

Thank you so much for coming by today. We truly appreciate your support, comments and friendship.

SAWYER’S KALEIDOSCOPIC CATURDAY ART

Kaleidoscopic Caturday Art

Sawyer is here today in Lisbeth’s fish bed, which she received several years ago from her boyfriend Charles. Charles is an angel, but his gift remains and is a favorite of all the Kitties Blue who are able to fit inside. The day Sawyer was enjoying it, the fish was atop a warm radiator and in a sunpuddle. Pretty much everything a cat could want, except for maybe some nommy treats to munch.

The photo makes it look as if Sawyer’s head is not attached to his body, but he was in one piece the last time I checked.

Kaleidoscopic Art featuring a tabby cat in a fish bed.

To create the art, I used the Latham effect from Painnt with a slight change in hue and bump in saturation. The frame is again from the favpng app.

Here’s a jigsaw for all my puzzling friends.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

Kitties Blue and I sure hope you are getting ready to snap your selfie for tomorrow’s blog hop. We always look forward to seeing your selfie as do all your other friends. As per usual, I have no idea who will be your host tomorrow. The gang may be discussing it among themselves, but if so, they have not put forth a candidate. I actually suspect they are all trying to push another to the front of line and avoid the duty themselves. But rest assured, someone will be here tomorrow to greet you.

Thanks for stopping by today. Have a terrific Caturday.

RAINY DAY NAPPERS & FILL-INS

Feline Friday

We continue to have lots of cloudy, rainy and windy days. When the catio is not a fun place to be, Kitties Blue are napping somewhere in the house. Most days, I think I should have named this blog, The Napping Cats.

Four cats napping on a king-sized bed on a rainy day.

As soon as Cooper Murphy, Sawyer, Audrey and Calista Jo wake up, they will be heading over to messymimi’s meanderings for the Feline Friday blog hop. Click on the badge below if you would like to join the hop.

Friendly Fill-Ins

The Friendly Fill-Ins blog hop is hosted each Friday by Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged Furballs). They publish the fill-in sentences on their blogs each Thursday. To join the hop, click on the badge at the left.

For the second week in a row, I completed the fill-ins without any help from Kitties Blue. Thankfully, they were pretty easy again this week. I used teal italics for my fill-ins. Any explanatory information is in parentheses.

1. The last thing I cooked was egg in a hole, which supposedly has 65 other names; though, the list of names I found on-line did not include what we called this when I was growing up, which was “Warwick.” That’s what soldiers called it in WWII…at least where my dad was stationed in New Guinea. (Dad Tom does most of the cooking now.)

2. When I go out to eat, my usual order is different depending on the restaurant. (Recently, I have been trying fried green tomato BLTs at different restaurants to determine where to get the best one.)

3. I feel most comfortable when I’m at home, not wearing a bra and with a cat on my lap.

4. I purchase Comfort Zone refills, litter, prescription dry cat food and a variety of other cat supplies on a very regular basis. (All are on auto delivery, except for canned noms.)

Thanks for stopping to see us today. Kitties Blue and I will be back tomorrow with some Caturday Art.

PAWSFUL OF THANKFULS

Thankful Thursday

Each Thursday we like to join Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday blog hop. This week, we have pawsful of thankfuls. So, I will skipping The Two Spoiled Cats’ (Angel Sammy and Teddy) Thoroughly Poetic Thursday. This week’s inspiration photo did not speak to me. With apologies to Teddy and Angel Sammy, I won’t be including the poem in a future post.

Time With Friends

Dad Tom and I are thankful we got to have lunch with Angel Sammy and Teddy’s (Two Spoiled Cats) mom and dad, Pam and David, last Friday. We hadn’t seen them since last May, and a visit together was long past due. I am particularly thankful as well for the kitty goodies gifted to me by Pam.

Pam (Two Spoiled Cats) and Janet (The Cat on My Head) bloggers.

Some Additional Thankfuls

I am thankful I was able to enjoy a long telephone visit with my nephew Gene on Caturday. I was excited to hear that he has adopted a five-year-old, tuxie cat named Dennis from the SPCA.

Dad Tom and I are thankful we got to see a bit of the eclipse on Monday prior to it being swallowed up by thick clouds.

pawsful thankfuls: April 9, 2024 Eclipse from Blacksburg, Va.

I am thankful for the beauty of springtime. Many tulips have bloomed this year that have been dormant in the past couple of years. We missed getting photos of my new deep purple hyacinths and some of the daffodils, but here are a few photos Dad Tom took yesterday. This is a small representation of what’s going on in the yard.

Purrseverance

pawsful thankfuls: Book cover for Purrseverance. Finally a day Sawyer and I have been waiting for has arrived…the publication of the anthology, Purrseverance: Inspiring Stories of Cat Resilience and Hope, compiled by Sierra Koester from Fur Everywhere. Twenty-five percent of the profits from the book will be donated to the Colorado Feline Foster Rescue now through April 2024. A different recipient will be selected each year.

You can buy the book today on Amazon or Barnes and Noble for $2.99 for the e-book version or $16.99 for the paperback version. Sawyer has his paws crossed that you will do so, as his story is included. You know that Sawyer has and continues to “purrsevere,” through dealing with his frequent seizures as well as his three-and-a-half week walkabout (disappearance) in 2021.

Finally, Kitties Blue and I are most thankful for your support, following, commenting and being our friends. We are truly blessed.

We will we joining the blog hop at Brian’s Home. To do the same, share your thankfuls on your blog and then click on the badge below.

National Pet Day

Today is National Pet Day. If you click on the link, it will take you to One Fur All Pets where you’ll find some ideas for celebrating. Kitties Blue suggest giving extra treats to your babies.

HAPPINESS IS LIKE A CAT

Sparks

A silly ginger cat upside down in a cat tree with the following quote from William Bennett, "Happiness is like a cat, If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you; it will never come. But if you pay not attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing against your legs and jumping into your lap."

I think my selection for a Spark needs no explanation. It spoke to me for several reasons. Two of those are that it reminded me of Kitties Blue. Audrey is the leg rubber and both Kizmet and Astrid are the lap jumpers. Sometimes those little traits can be annoying. For the most part, however, they are sweet and endearing and do bring both Dad Tom and I much happiness.

It is Periwinkle’s week to plan what they’ll be doing. Stinky is really looking forward to seeing her, and I am certain they’ll be doing something extraordinarily fun. I know they will be looking for you tomorrow. So, please don’t forget to check in at Friends Furever to find out what they get up to and into!

Thanks for joining us today.

MR. GRUMPY’S SELFIE

Sunday Selfies: Week #503

A grey tabby cat selfie with a totally grumpy expression.

Sawyer agreed to take a selfie, but he did not agree to be happy about it. And, as he is always a of cat a few words, (His alter ego, Stinky, is the chatterbox.) this post is going to be concise. I do, however, apologize that your host today is not very welcoming. Regardless, all the Kitties Blue and I hope you will consider joining our blog hop. We all need some sweet and happy animal selfies to put smiles on our faces.

If you cannot join in the fun today, we truly wish you will add your selfie to the hop before it closes at the end of the day Thursday.

As aways, we totally appreciate your visiting, commenting and being our friends.

Please enjoy a nice and easy Sunday.

COLORFUL GINGER TABBY ART

Caturday Art

A ginger tabby cat napping in a sunpuddle in a colorful art creation.

I swear the only thing Kitties Blue do is nap, except at mealtime, of course. Cooper Murphy was enjoying a sunpuddle nap, and is now a colorful ginger tabby.

I created the art with the Faaantasia (yes, that’s how it is spelled) effect from Painnt. I bumped up both the contrast and the saturation and added analog coloring. To that I added the XOXO filter from piZap at 100 percent. The frame is from the favpng app.

Here’s a puzzle for those of you who are fans.

Cooper Murphy will be participating in the Caturday Art blog hop hosted by Athena Cat Goddess Wise Kitty. If you would like to join him, click on Athena’s badge.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

I don’t know where the time goes, but another week has flown by, and it’s time for Sunday Selfies tomorrow. With any luck, I will remember to schedule the post, unlike Friday. If you missed yesterday’s post, it’s because I forgot to schedule it, and I only published it a couple hours before this one. It has an adorable photo of Kizmet, so I really hope you will check it out. The link is at the bottom of this post.

But, I do digress. Kitties Blue and I will be looking for your adorable selfie tomorrow. So, please do join us on the hop. You don’t even need to post tomorrow to do so. The hop remains open through Thursday.

Thanks for joining us today. Enjoy your Caturday.
